Gubba Rum Makes Believers Out of New Orleans
The organic, artisanal rum that had folks “screaming alleluia” in the Big Easy has arrived in
New England and the Rocky Mountains.
(New Orleans, LA — July 20, 2013) Cocktail enthusiasts lined up early at New Orleans’s annual Tales of the Cocktail for a taste of Gubba Rum paired with one of the city’s finest desserts. The historic Hotel Monteleone served up samples of its famous white chocolate bread pudding with a Gubba Gold rum sauce as industry insiders from distillers to distributors to bartenders competed for standing room at the Gubba Rum snack stand and sipped Gubba Rum cocktails. Attendees also met the pairing behind this impeccably smooth spirit—its creator, Steven Gubb of Massachusetts, and Kristian Naslund of Colorado’s Dancing Pines Distillery, distillers of Gubba Gold and Gubba Silver.
Inspired by the native rum he and his wife enjoyed on a trip to St. Martin, Gubb returned home determined to bring the flavors of the Caribbean to the United States. His partnership with Dancing Pines combines New England’s Yankee ingenuity with the creative energy and local pride of the craft distilling movement of the Rockies, resulting in unforgettable, groundbreaking rum that will retail for $19.95 a bottle. After rave reviews in New Orleans, Gubba Rum promises to reignite America’s love of rum when it rolls out in September across Massachusetts.
“Our product is organic. It is artisanal, handcrafted, and a lot of love has gone into it. It’s a premium taste at a very competitive price,” Gubb told rum lover and “Inside New Orleans” radio host Eric Asher during an on-air tasting at the Hotel Monteleone on WGSO 990 AM. “We consider this to be a step-up brand that will make it as a well rum at any bar in America. You’re not going to cook with bad wine—why would you make a cocktail with a lesser distilled spirit?”
Asher agreed wholeheartedly. “I want to tell you right now—it’s an excellent rum,” he said. “You’ve got yourself a heck of a product. … I can see myself sitting back on my balcony, with a cool breeze flowing, just sipping on a little Gubba Gold or a Gubba Silver.”
During the live tasting, Asher and Tales of the Cocktail co-founder Paul Tuennerman gave high marks to both the Gubba Gold and Gubba Silver. Both are made with organic cane sugar, both are 70 proof, and both are smooth as silk. Gubba Silver offers a hint of coconut and notes of Caribbean fruits. It mixes beautifully in pina coladas and mojitos and sips well straight or over ice. Gubba Gold melds flavors of natural vanilla bean and tropical fruits with warm colors of caramel and brown sugar. Gubb recommends the Gold over ice, straight, or in a Cuba Libre. “That’s a bottle of trouble right there,” Tuennerman said, remarking on how smooth it tasted unmixed.
“Amen to that,” added Asher. “I’m screaming alleluia.”
Gubba Rum owes its rich, full-bodied flavor to the artistry of the small-batch distillers at Dancing Pines and their commitment to using the finest natural ingredients and time-honored techniques. “They infuse the rum with real coconut, real vanilla,” Gubb explained. “We’re not using extracts.” In fact, the Gubba Rum recipe is inspired by a Creole recipe.
“You can taste it, you really can,” Asher added between sips. “I can taste the vanilla notes in the Gold, and I can taste the coconut notes in the Silver.”
Perhaps the most humbling compliment for America’s newest rum came at New Orleans’ oldest restaurant—the 173-year-old Antoine’s at 713 Rue Saint Louis, where Gubb was invited to have lunch as a guest of owner Yvonne Davis, a sixth-generation descendant of founder Antoine Alciatore. After a delicious lunch of vichyssoise and veal burgundy, the lunch party savored both the Gubba Gold and Gubba Silver. Their spirited praise drew the attention of a family dining at a nearby table that asked about the handsome bottles. Invited to try it for themselves, they quickly joined the legions of fans of Gubba Rum in New Orleans.
